Why This Book Matters

More than four decades after the events of 10 February 1984, the Wagala Massacre remains one of the most painful and debated chapters in Kenya’s history. For many years, the experiences of survivors, families, and witnesses received limited public attention, leaving important stories untold and undocumented.

This book seeks to preserve those stories for future generations. By bringing together eyewitness accounts, historical records, and documented evidence, it provides a platform for voices that might otherwise be forgotten. Beyond recounting historical events, the book serves as a contribution to collective memory, encouraging reflection, dialogue, and a deeper understanding of the human impact of conflict and state violence.

The aim is not to assign blame or advance a particular narrative, but to ensure that the historical record remains accessible, accurate, and grounded in the experiences of those who lived through the events.

The Author's Approach

This work is founded on the principle that history should be recorded as faithfully as possible. Rather than relying on speculation, the book draws extensively from eyewitness testimonies, survivor accounts, archival materials, government records, media reports, and historical research related to the events of 10 February 1984.

The objective is to document what happened through the voices of those who experienced it, preserving their accounts for future generations. Wherever possible, events are presented in their original context, allowing readers to engage directly with the evidence and testimonies provided.

By prioritizing factual documentation over interpretation, the book seeks to contribute to an accurate historical record while honoring the experiences of survivors, families, and communities affected by the tragedy.
